Product Information:

Chromium Picolinateis an effective source of chromium, with superior bioavailability, making it an excellent Chromium supplement.

Chromium is an essential nutrient, required for:

• The metabolism of macronutrients (carbohydrates, lipids and proteins), through its capacity to influence insulin action
• Maintaining healthy levels of glucose in the blood

Chromium Picolinate is a form of trivalent Chromium, or Chromium (III). This is the form that is most prevalent in nature and in the human diet. The other active form, hexavalent Chromium, Chromium (VI), is less stable, and can be carcinogenic. Generally, only up to 2% of ingested trivalent Chromium is absorbed by the body. Chromium Picolinate absorbency is up to 2.8%, although may be less from supplements containing additives which inhibit absorbtion. Once absorbed, the Chromium ions become active, or are stored, while the majority of the picolinate is excreted via the urine.

Chromium quantities in unprocessed foods are generally low. Good natural sources are meat, broccoli, tea leaves, cocoa, whole grains, pulses, spices, oils, potatoes, coffee, fish and preserves. Processed foods, and processed meats in particular, have a higher chromium content, thanks to the chromium found in the stainless steel equipment used in their preparation.

The RDA for Chromium is 40 mcg per day (0.04 mg). A sensible upper limit for total daily chromium intake is in the range of 300 to 400 mcg. Metabolics’ Chromium Picolinate capsules each deliver 200mcg of elemental Chromium. This is a strong, low-risk, dose of Chromium. It is recommended not to exceed one capsule per day unless prescribed by a health practitioner.

Trivalent Chromium is regarded as having very low toxicity. However, sustained intake above the recommended upper limit can lead to adverse effects. Too much Chromium can impair the body’s uptake of Iron. In sufficient quantities, continued excess intake of chromium can lead to reversible anaemia, and kidney or liver dysfunction.
