Metabolics Cilantro supplement is made from the leaf of the coriander plant and, as such, holds the same health benefits of eating cilantro in your diet whilst all the convenience of being available in a capsule. Cilantro is quite a divisive taste, with some people loving the citrus kick it gives to fresh salsa and Mexican dishes, whereas others associate it with an unpleasant soap-like taste, making taking the herb in capsule form more appealing.
Interestingly, recent research has put this perceived soap taste down to a gene that detects specific aldehydes, with research suggesting this taste could affect as many as a quarter of the worldwide population.
All parts of the coriander plant can be used in cooking but typically the fresh leaves and dried seeds are what are used most frequently in cooking.
Cilantro is a great source of flavonoids including quercetin, kaempferol, rhamnetin and apigenin. It is also rich in the volatile oils carvone, geraniol, limonene, borneol, camphor, elemol and linalool.
These volatile oils have demonstrated antimicrobial properties. It also contains the compound dodecanol. Dodecanol has been shown to be twice as effective as antibiotics at killing salmonella.
The herb cilantro is also linked to supporting heart health and cognitive health due to its anti-inflammatory properties.
The herb is a great source of a number of nutrients such as vitamin C, vitamin A and vitamin K, as well as folate, potassium, manganese, choline, beta-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin.
While the numerous health benefits of cilantro can be easily obtained through adding the herb to your diet, if you’re one of the many who struggle with its taste, a food supplement may be a preferable option for you.
