NADH Beta-Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (reduced form)
This is a naturally occurring coenzyme found in every cell of the human body. As the reduced counterpart of NAD⁺, it plays a pivotal role in cellular metabolism by shuttling electrons and facilitating redox reactions essential for life.
Within the citric acid (Krebs) cycle, NADH is generated when metabolic intermediates are oxidized. It then transports these high-energy electrons to the mitochondrial electron-transport chain, where its oxidation back to NAD⁺ drives the production of ATP via oxidative phosphorylation.
At the molecular level, NADH is formed when NAD⁺ accepts two hydrogen atoms—one as a hydride ion (H⁻) and one as a proton (H⁺). This electron-carrying capacity makes NADH indispensable for generating the energy currency of the cell.
