Proline is a non-essential amino acid and is required for the synthesis of collagen. Collagen is a crucial structural component in bones, cartilage, connective tissues (such as tendons) and skin.
Collagen has at its core a triple helix of amino acid chains; three chains wrapped around each other. Each chain is constructed from repetitions of x-y-gly three-amino-acid units, in which the X and Y positions are often occupied by prolines (and the gly is glycine). Proline constitutes about 12% of collagen.
A lesser attribute of proline is its potential as an energy facilitator in situations of cellular stress. In such situations proline can be broken down, through the action of proline oxidase, and in combination with the degradation products of the cellular wall matrix can form ATP. ATP is crucial in cellular energy metabolism.
Proline is important in pregnancy because of its role in supporting the development of the foetus. It has a particular significance in lung development.
Each capsule of this supplement contains 340mg of proline.
