Ubiquinol (Coenzyme Q10)
Coenzyme Q10 (COQ10) is a fat soluble molecule produced in the body that aids energy production. It is found in the cell membranes, especially the membranes of mitochondria and in good health is abundant in the heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, spleen, pancreas and adrenal glands.
95% of cellular energy depends on adequate COQ10 residing in the mitochondrial membranes. As CoQ10 acts as a powerful free radical scavenger in the body, the more available COQ10 there is, the less free radical damage. After birth, CoQ10 increases in the heart and other vital organs rises until age 20 when it undergoes continuous decline. The heart requires more energy than any other organ and the greatest concentration of COQ10, especially as we age.
Studies show chronic heart conditions including congestive heart failure have diminished COQ10 in heart tissue. Other health conditions are also known to be associated with low levels of COQ10 such as fibromyalia , migraines, male infertility, Parkinsons and post heart attack. It is well known that statins can reduce serum levels of COQ10 by 40% (Ref 1) and people on statins may benefit from COQ10. There are 2 forms of COQ10, Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol. Ubiquinone is the oxidized form and Ubiquinol is the reduced form of COQ10 (so Ubiquinol is the 2 electron donor form of Ubiquinone ) making it a more powerful antioxidant) 90% of COQ10 exists in the human plasma as Ubiquinol and Ubiquinol can remain in the blood 8 hours longer than Ubiquinone ( Ref 2, 3) Due to its fat soluble nature Ubiquinol should be taken with a good fat such as avocado.
