What is Metabolics Potassium Iodide?

Metabolics Potassium Iodide is a liquid supplement providing a precise source of iodine in the form of potassium iodide. Iodine is an essential trace element that contributes to normal thyroid function and the production of thyroid hormones, which are vital for regulating metabolism, growth, and development.

Potassium iodide is also the form of iodine commonly added to iodised salt to help prevent iodine deficiency.

What is Metabolics Potassium Iodide for?

Potassium iodide is a source of iodine frequently taken by people exposed to radioactive iodine from leaking nuclear reactors such as Fukushima in Japan. Radioactive iodine results from uranium atoms split apart after being struck by a neutron in a nuclear reactor. The thyroid gland cannot differentiate between radioactive iodine and stable non-radioactive iodine Potassium iodide so potassium iodide taken before or shortly after iodine enters the body is absorbed by the thyroid gland resulting in less radioactive iodine being absorbed. So Potassium iodide does not neutralise radiation it simply prevents any more radioactive iodine being absorbed. Although much of the radioactive iodine will be eliminated from the body in a matter of weeks, the radiation can have a very damaging effect on the tissues resulting in genetic mutations.

Current regulations in the USA advise populations living within a 10 mile radius of a nuclear plant to maintain a supply of potassium iodide.

The Scottish Environmental protection agency constantly measures radiation levels in the UK and although increases were noted in 2011 after the tsunami that crippled Japan's Fukushimas reactors, these settled to background levels.

Recently concern lies in more leakage into the water surrounding the reactors and the effects of two further magnitude 5 earthquakes on 8th February 2014 off Japan's Fukushima area are still being monitored.

Thousands of litres of radioactive water are now being stored by Fukushimo leaking 300 tons into the ocean every day.

The Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) are now considering dumping the radioactive toxic water into the Pacific ocean. On the 7th February 2014 TEPCO admitted that they had detected radiation levels at 160,000 times the state standard for radioactive waste water normally released into the sea.
