Magnesium contributes to normal psychological function and normal functioning of the nervous system. It plays an essential role in nerve signalling, neurotransmission and energy production.
Magtein® magnesium L-threonate was developed through research investigating magnesium availability within the central nervous system. Preclinical studies explored its effects on brain magnesium concentrations, synaptic plasticity and memory-related processes, leading to subsequent human clinical research.
A randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial evaluated a magnesium L-threonate-containing formulation in adults aged 50–70 years with cognitive impairment over 12 weeks. The study assessed executive function, working memory, attention and episodic memory, reporting a statistically significant improvement in overall cognitive ability, measured using a composite score across the four cognitive domains. An overall treatment effect was also observed for executive function, while working memory improved significantly at six weeks. Improvements in attention and episodic memory were not statistically significant compared with placebo.
Magtein® has also been investigated in clinical studies evaluating sleep quality, daytime functioning, stress and anxiety. In adults with self-reported sleep problems, supplementation was associated with improvements in several objective measures of sleep, together with improvements in mental alertness, mood and daytime functioning. A separate 12-week study in adults with self-reported stress and anxiety reported significant improvements from baseline in self-rated stress and anxiety, together with a clinically meaningful reduction in the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A) fear sub-score. Further research is needed to confirm these findings.
