Caprylic acid, which is also known as octanoic acid, is a medium chain triglyceride (fatty acid) that is easily absorbed and metabolised. It is found naturally in dairy and other sources, for example butter, palm oil and coconut oil.
Caprylic acid is partially metabolised to long chain saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids in a process that is not fully understood. Yet the mechanism of this metabolism releases energy in a manner that makes it a good source of rapidly available energy.
Each capsule contains 290mg of caprylic acid. There are no reports of direct toxicity in high doses of caprylic acid, although extreme doses have had adverse effects. But it must also be remembered that caprylic acid is converted to saturated and monounsaturated fats. So longer term, higher levels of consumption are likely to give rise to potential problems associated with saturated fats.
