Betaine is also known as trimethylglycine (TMG). It is made in the body and one of its most important functions is that it contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism. Homocysteine is a chemical in the blood produced when the body breaks down an amino acid called methionine. High blood levels of homocysteine can damage cholesterol, leading to damage of artery walls. Betaine can act as a methyl donor in the remethylation of homocysteine in the liver by the enzyme betaine-homocystene methyltransferase. Betaine along with B6 and B12 all contribute to the breakdown of this potentially dangerous chemical (See Metabolics Homocystene formula) Doses in excess of 4gm may significantly increase total blood cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.
