Welcome to this month’s product of the month newsletter, where we explore the wonder of nutrition to support your well-being. This month, we are diving into the realm of essential fatty acids- the building blocks of a healthy body and mind. Our spotlight shines on two powerhouse products; DHA and Borage Oil. As we navigate through the intricate pathways of nutrition and wellness, join us in discovering the benefits that these fatty acids offer. From supporting brain health to soothing inflammation, let's unlock the secrets of DHA and Borage Oil.

Let’s start with DHA- DHA is an Omega 3 fatty acid (phospholipid) making up about a third of our brains. DHA can be obtained directly from the flesh of cold-water fish, along with EPA, or the body can make small amounts from Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA), found in flaxseed oil. Babies can directly receive DHA through breastmilk so it is worth considering alongside antenatal support. Let’s take a look further in to how DHA can benefit us,

Brain Health

DHA is highly concentrated in the brain, particularly in areas responsible for memory, cognition and learning. It is an essential component of cell membranes and supports neuronal function. Adequate levels of DHA are associated with improved cognitive function and memory retention.

Eye Health

DHA is also abundant in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It contributes to the structure and function of the retinal cells, particularly in the cells responsible for vision. Consuming enough DHA can help reduce the risk of eye disorders and support eye health generally.

Heart Health

Omega 3 fatty acids, including DHA have been shown to have cardio-protective effects in supporting heart health. They help lower triglyceride levels, reduce inflammation, improve blood vessel function and regulate heart rhythm. Regular DHA consumption can help lower the risk of cardiovascular diseases by supporting heart health overall.

DHA has anti-inflammatory properties that help modulate the body’s inflammatory response. Chronic inflammation can be associated with various health conditions including cardiovascular diseases and arthritis.

Mood and Mental Health

DHA can play a role in regulating mood and mental health. Adequate levels can help support against feelings of depression, anxiety and other mood disorders. DHA supplementation can help support overall emotional well-being.

Pregnancy and Early Development

DHA is particularly important during pregnancy and early childhood development, making it important in conception support and for children’s health generally. It is critical for the development of the foetal brain and nervous system as well as for maintaining optimal cognitive function in infants and children. Maternal intake of DHA during pregnancy and breastfeeding is associated with normal cognitive outcomes in offspring.

Incorporating DHA rich foods such as fatty fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines), algae and Metabolics DHA Supplement can help ensure you are meeting your body’s needs for this essential nutrient and supporting your overall health and well-being.

Borage Oil

So now let’s take a look at Borage Oil. Borage Oil is extracted from the seeds of the star shaped, blue borage flower. It is rich in gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), an essential omega-6 fatty acid. GLA is known for its potential health benefits, which can contribute to overall well-being in various ways:

Skin Health

GLA is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties which may help support the body against symptoms of skin conditions such as eczema and psoriasis. Borage Oil may help improve skin hydration, elasticity and texture, supporting skin health generally.

Joint Health

GLA may help reduce inflammation and support the body against symptoms associated with arthritis and other inflammatory joint conditions. Borage Oil may help joint health by reducing joint pain, stiffness and swelling.

Heart Health

GLA and other omega 6 fatty acids may have positive effects on cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation and improving blood vessel function. Borage Oil may help lower blood pressure, reduce LDL (bad) cholesterol levels and increase HDL (good) cholesterol levels.

Brain function

Omega 6 fatty acids like GLA are essential components of cell membranes in the brain and nervous system. Borage Oil may support cognitive function, mood stability and overall brain health.

Hormone Balance

GLA plays a role in hormone regulation and may deliver hormone support by alleviating symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances such as menstrual cramps, breast tenderness and mood swings. Borage Oil may be beneficial for women experiencing premenstrual syndrome or menopausal symptoms.

Anti-inflammatory effects

GLA has been studied for its anti-inflammatory properties, which may benefit individuals with chronic inflammation conditions such as asthma, inflammatory bowel disease and autoimmune disorders.

Eye Health

GLA is a component of healthy retinal tissue and borage oil may support eye health and vision. GLA may help reduce symptoms of dry eye syndrome.

Fatty acids effects on health

As we conclude this month’s newsletter, we hope you have found the information useful when making decisions about your health and nutrition. Fatty acids play an important role in day-to-day health and lesser-known fatty acids, such as DHA and borage oil, can be overlooked when, in fact, they are packed with health-supporting properties.
